Cast of New Moon Caught Onset Smoking?

new-moon-smoking-castI absolutely love Twilight, including all of the actors: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Nikki Reed and Peter Facinelli, to name a few. When I came across these photos online earlier today, I was really disappointed.

I’m sure that Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are well aware of the social impact they have on teenagers these days. All they have to do is a quick Google search to see the hundreds of pages created in emulation and adoration of their Twilight work. I know that Stephanie Meyer certainly didn’t write smoking parts into her Twilight saga. Then why? Why do they have to be so irresponsible?

I’m a thirty-one year old woman who brazenly smoked throughout my twenties. I’ll admit, I loved it. Being a writer, I relished my guilty pleasure and even fooled myself into believing that I relied on smoking for my creativity. However, once I turned thirty-0ne, reality set in. A close friend of mine had her lung collapse, and was incidentally in a coma for eight days, before being diagnosed with lung cancer. She was only 33.

After that, I fought an uphill battle for months, and I am happy to say that today I am nearly six months quit. Each day has been a challenge, and I am so thankful for my successful quit that I would never go back. When I saw the cast of New Moon smoking, I couldn’t even believe it. Is it a hoax? Did someone mess with photos of the actors in order to create a scandal, or even mere disapproval? Are Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson simply unaware of the implicit responsibility that is tenuous to their success and that of the movie? Don’t they know that they are the latest teen role models? Are they merely Twilight smokers (those that only smoke at night)?

In any case, hopefully teenagers realize that only those who are blessed or cursed (depending on how you look at it) with immortality can safely smoke cigarettes. I know it may seem uncool for me to reiterate yet another anti-tobacco sentiment, but people gotta know. Especially in this economy, I’d rather spend ten bucks on some cool Twilight merchandise or even a blank journal than a pack of cigarettes.

    Hello there,

I understand why this would make you feel upset. However, as you stated yourself, you used to smoke for many years before you realized that smoking does no good. These people may be actors, but they are above all else humans and they are bound to have faults and make mistakes. Some of them may realize it someday, some of them surely won’t. I imagine the pressure under which they must live right now, so I try to put myself in their shoes.

I know very well that smoking isn’t right, but I’ve spent many years understanding the psychology behind that addiction and I try to show as much compassion as I can to the smokers. I mean, it’s just sad, watching a human throwing away his life like that. It’s like standing there and watching someone walking slowly towards the end of a cliff.

The teenagers will be seeing many things in their lives. The real question is if their parents raised them correctly, if the teens will make the correct decision when a friend of them suggests them to smoke or to do drugs.

I live in Athens, Greece. Here, there is no place for non-smokers. We have the highest percentage of smokers in Europe. Almost all teens I know have tried smoking or are regular smokers. And how can they not be, when their parents sent them from children to buy them cigarettes? At that age, above everything else, it’s what you got from your parents that will lead you through those decisions. Those that were raised correctly, even if they do smoke at some point, sooner or later they’ll understand the wrongness of it and change their course.

I live my life between smokers. In middle-school most of my classmates had tried smoking. By high-school half of them were regular smokers. Yet I’ve never even tried it; as well as my sister. And we thank our parents for that.

The question is not whether actors, singers, models should smoke in public; they have the freedom to do whatever they want. And we cannot blindfold teenagers either, because by doing so we are being overprotective and they will never be able to learn to choose, to see the world for what it is and see how their actions affect themselves and others. We only have to educate them and show them the right road to follow. For me, everyone can smoke as much as he wants as long as I (or children around him) do not have to breathe his smoke.

Wow, that’s a big message I just wrote! Hope it makes sense too, I apologize in advance for any mistakes, but English is not my first language.

Take Care and Keep writing (that was an interesting article!),
    Ioanna

I am in LOVE with twilight expecially Robert Pattinson. They should ALL be ashamed of them selves the example they are setting for all the kid who absoulutley adore Twilight is atrocious. I CAN`T DESCRIBE how dissapointed I am in them. SHAME ON THEM!!!!

  • kiv says:

I’m sure they never intended to be role models. It’s all in the parents to control what their kids do. So, I don’t think it’s irresponsible at all

Good job on quitting..im sure it wasnt easy. but it will be worth it. my grandpa passed away because he got sick and all the years of smoking weakened his lungs and worsened his condition. he had rouble breathing and was really uncomfortable. (he smoked from when he was 18 until he was about 80-ish)
and i would just like to say that although i am disappointed in them..i LOVE twilight and all the actors in it. i wsh they would quit though, so the same thingthat happened to your friend or my grandpa doesnt hppen to any of them.

I love you Robert Pattinson!!! You play an awesome vampire in twilight!!!

  • Joe says:

Kristen Stewart dropped about twenty F-Bombs in the film “Panic Room” when she was 12. She curses even more in Adventureland, and that’s not recounting the partial nudity and sensuality her part required in that film as well. The character she plays in the movie “In The Land of Women” smokes. She’s an actor. They’re all actors. To them, the Twilight saga is a job. They will come, perform their roles in tenure to their contracts, and move on with their lives. They are being paid to act; not to embody the moral beliefs that the author whose work the film is based off of, nor to the expectation to that work’s target audience in their personal lives.

With what these kids are being paid, I don’t think the economy really has any effect on their vices. There’s certainly nothing stopping them from spending a few dollars out of several million to get a pack of smokes.

  • I NIEVES says:

PEOPLE SAY THAT THEY ARE BAD EXAMPLES FOR YOUNG KIDS COME ON I BET 90% OF THE PEOPLE THAT COMMENT ABOUT THIS OR SMOKE, USE DRUGS OR DRINK ALCOHOL THEY DIDN’T DO THE MOVIE TO BE EXAMPLE ON NOBODY THAT WASN’T ON THEIR CONTRACTS SO PLEASE LOOK AROUND U FIRST AND THEN TALK U ARE THE ONE THAT HAVE TO GIVE A GOOD EXAMPLE TO YOUR KIDS.

  • Ginny says:

Are you serious. None of these actors were smoking in Twilight or New Moon, they were smoking on their own time and were not flaunting their smoking. It is all the news media invading their private lives. If you think that any of these actors smoking is more influential to children than a human wanting to be an immortal vampire you will need to seriously explain this.
Cancer is a horrific disease and most people are affected by this disease in knowing someone who has had cancer, or they have cancer. If you want to blame lung cancer ONLY to smoking you need to do some research before you speak. Lung cancer is not ONLY caused by smoking or being exposed to smoke. Most of these actors are teens themselves so let them live their lives. It is their parents responsibility to guide them. You are not their parents to tell them what to do. If you find this so offensive then stop looking for pics of them. Hopefully they will all stop smoking.

  • C says:

Honestly it’s not your life…If smoking is what they want to do then let them. They are old enough to make there own decisions an should be left alone to do so. Anyone who is over 12 knows that smoking is bad for your health, but that has not stopped millions of people from doing it everyday. Your bitching and dissing them for doing it is not about to stop them either. They will just do it behind closed doors.
